Difficulty Scaling Calculator
This calculator compares an enemy stat curve against a player power curve across levels, normalized to their starting ratio, to show whether a game trends relatively harder or easier than where it began. For the full framework on aligning difficulty with progression, see how to balance RPG progression.
How This Calculator Works
Both curves use the same simple linear-or-exponential scaling as the XP curve calculator. The ratio of enemy stat to player power at each level is normalized against that same ratio at level 1, so the output shows relative change rather than requiring you to interpret raw numbers. This is a single-stat model â a real game usually needs this run for damage, effective HP, and other stats separately, and cross-checked against the difficulty curve audit checklist.
FAQ: Difficulty Scaling
What does "relative to starting difficulty" mean?
It's the ratio of enemy stat to player power at each level, divided by that same ratio at level 1. A value of 100% means the game is exactly as hard, relatively, as it was at the start; above 100% means it's gotten relatively harder, below means relatively easier.
What should I use for 'player power'?
Whatever single number best represents effective player strength at each level â total gear score, expected damage output, or effective HP are all reasonable choices. The specific stat matters less than using the same kind of number consistently across levels.
Is a rising or falling curve always a problem?
Not automatically â some games intentionally get relatively harder toward the endgame for veteran players, or relatively easier early on to build confidence. The value of this tool is seeing the actual shape you've built, not judging it against a universal target.
How is this different from the XP curve calculator?
The XP curve calculator models progression pacing (how much XP each level requires). This tool compares two independent power curves â enemy and player â to check whether they scale at compatible rates, which is a different (though related) question covered in the RPG progression balance guide.
